Aggie Gateway to Success (Gateway) is a provisional admission program at Texas A&M University that is administered through Texas A&M University General Academic Programs. Gateway students are given a unique chance to gain full admission by taking summer courses and proving how well they can do academically. Each summer, over 300 of the 20,000+ Texas A&M applicants are offered this exclusive opportunity.  Gateway Summer 2009 is in the planning stage, so information on this website is subject to change.

Selection:

Students are selected for participation in the Aggie Gateway to Success program by the office of Admissions http://admissions.tamu.edu/.  Students may not apply for the AGS program until they have been “provisionally admitted”.  General Academic Programs staff members do not have a say in provisional admission.  Please direct questions about the admissions process to the Office of Admissions.

Gaining Full Admission:

Students admitted in the Aggie Gateway to Success Program for summer 2009 must meet the following requirements to become a fully admitted freshman for the fall:

  • Students will attend a 6-week summer session at Texas A&M.  Dates: June 28 – August 11.
  • A summer course schedule will be assigned to the students by the Gateway Program Facilitator based on their intended major, previous course credit, and strengths or weakness reflected in students’ test scores.  This is a prescribed program.  Students may not select their own courses.
  • Students will take two solid academic courses (3 credit hours each) and STLC 289 (1 credit hour) to finish the summer with 7 credit hours at Texas A&M University .

Grade Requirement:

  • Students must complete the two assigned solid academic courses with at least a 2.0 average and no failing grades.
  • Students must pass STLC 289 and have a cumulative GPR of 2.0 or higher.
  • Student must not commit Scholastic Dishonesty as determined by the Aggie Honor Code Board.

Outcomes:

Success rates for students participating in the Gateway summer program have been high in recent years. This past summer over 87% of the Gateway Summer 2008 students successfully completed the summer and were fully admitted for Fall 2008 semester. Of those provisional students who attend at least one semester beyond the summer, graduation rates are the same as those for the regularly admitted freshmen.

Summer Events:

As part of the Gateway program, students will participate in several academic and social events throughout the summer to enhance their First Year Experience in Aggieland. Attendance is mandatory.  Students find these events are great ways to connect with their fellow freshmen and adjust to Texas A&M University during the summer!

Pre-week - Academic Basics (Mandatory):

  • June 28 (Sunday) - Students arrive and check into their summer dorm.
  • June 29-30 - New Student Conference – Mandatory for all AGS students.  No exceptions.

Social Events (will include but are not limited to):

  • Welcome BBQ
  • Ice Cream Social

Summer Courses:

  • TBA:  Will be assigned by General Academic Programs Advising staff.

Gateway Scholarship Opportunities:

Please be aware that scholarship opportunities may change on a year-to-year basis.

For the past three summers, all Gateway students have been given a Gateway Summer Scholarship worth $1,000 for the summer session. This $1,000 scholarship also qualifies out-of-state residents to pay in-state tuition rates for the summer. This scholarship helps families alleviate the often unexpected expense of attending college classes in the summer.

In addition, General Academic Programs will also award at least two Junction Scholarships to deserving students from the Gateway Program with continued excellence in academics.  Upon completion of the fall semester, General Academics will invite eligible freshmen to apply for this competitive scholarship.  A committee will then review these applications and award $1,000 for fall and $1,000 for spring semester of sophomore year to each scholarship recipient.
